    Maximum Ride (4):
In the book Maximum Ride, the Essential questions that connect with the book are: What are the characteristics of love, and what are the characteristics of courage. In the book when Iggy finds his parents, the flock allows him to go live with his family because they love him and want the best for him. This shows how they show characteristics of love, because even though they want him to stay with them, they let him go and be happy because they know that it is the best for him. Also, in the book the flock does not give up when they are being hunted down by Itex. This shows courage because Itex is a very powerful company that is trying to kill them, but even though they are being followed wherever they go, the flock does not ever give up.
The Hardy Boys #9 To die or not to die?:
In the book The Hardy Boys, the Essential questions that connect with the book are: What are the characteristics of courage, and what things are important in life. In this book when Frank finds out that someone is trying to sabotage the drama competition, he stays in the competition anyway so he can find out who the criminal is. This shows characteristics of courage because even though Frank could be attacked next, he stays there so he can get close enough into the competition so he can figure out who the criminal is and protect the other competitors. Also, in the book Joelle finds out that was she did was completely wrong and realizes that she should not have been so desperate of attention. This shows what things are important in life because she realizes that getting attention is not important if it means that others are getting hurt in the process.

In the book, "Maximum Ride Volume 3" , the essential questions are: What are the characteristics of courage, what are the characteristics of love, what things are important in life, and what causes prejudice and how can it be avoided. In the book the characteristics of courage are when Max decides to fight off the Erasers for her family, and saving them. The characteristics of love are when the FBI agent takes in the kids and shows them how to live a normal life because it shows she cares about them. The things that are important in life within the book is for Max and her siblings to find their parents. Prejudice can be avoided if everyone stops prejudging people, this can be avoided when people take the time to get to know people.

In the book, "Ravenpaw's Path Shattered Peace", the essential questions are: What are the characteristics of courage, what are the characteristics of love, what things are important in life, and what causes prejudice and how can it be avoided. In the book the characteristics of courage and love is when Ravenpaw decides to save everyone from the burning farm because his best friend was in it. Prejudice is caused in this book when the high-class cats kick Ravenpaw out of their clan. This can be avoided if they don't prejudge him because he isn't a high-class cat.

  4. In the book Maximum Ride #2 by James Patterson, the essential questions are: what are the characteristics of courage and what causes prejudice and how can it be avoided. The characteristics of courage in this book are when the flock decides to escape the laboratory they are trapped inside of, and decide to hide from the erasers who are chasing them, instead of surrendering. Another characteristic is when the flock decides to find their families even though all their parents think they are dead, therefore having no care for them. The last characteristic of courage in this book is when Fang, one of the flock members fights against Ari, one of the erasers and protects Max and Nudge from his attack. To continue an essential question in this book is how prejudice can be avoided. In the book the flock avoids harshness by blending in with the society around them and keeping a low profile. Finally another way prejudice can be avoided is by not getting up in other peoples business and keep away anything that you believe people would find unnerving or obscure about your personality, or physical appearance.

In the book Little White Duck by Na Liu and Andres Vera Martinez, the essential questions are: what things are important in life and how can prejudice be avoided. in this book the essential question : the important things in life is answered by explaining how family, friends, and loved ones are the only things that matter in life. Material items are just luxuries that people possess to comfort them. they are not essential in life but family is. Family is there to give you love and support and help guide you through life. Just like in this book, Da Qin and Xiao Qin are beginning to learn this lesson when they go to visit their grandmother, who lives in a very rural village in China. he does not have much, but only because she does not need the comforts that brand new high tech objects give you. All she needs is her family. Same with loved ones and friends, they are what should be important to people in life because without them, what do you have. Only the accessories that money can buy you, but the only thing money can not buy you is a true to the heart friend. Da Qin also realizes this when she visits her grandmothers and observes that the children there dress differently and do not have any luxuries that she has. To continue, essential question how prejudice can be avoided pops up in this graphic novel. When Da Qin and Xiao Qin visit their grandmothers house and see that the children there seem to be very odd to Da Qin. This is because she does not know that people in that village do things differently but still possess characteristics of herself. Like her, the village children like to play. They also like to tell stories and talk about school and clothes. In conclusion, you can avoid prejudice by getting to know someone first and not just making assumptions based on their size or shape or appearance because they could end up being just like you personality wise.

  6. In the graphic novel, Maximum Ride Volume 1, the essential questions are: What are the characteristics of courage, love, and what causes prejudice and how can it be avoided. In the novel, the characteristics of courage is when Max and her Flock stands up to the Erasers to save their youngest member, who was kidnapped, Angel. Max also shows more characteristics of courage when she stands up to the boys who are picking on a girl, and even though they have weapons and threaten her she does not back down. A characteristic of love is throughout the whole novel and how the Flock knows it is its duty to save Angel for the despicable School before it is to late. Prejudice is caused when people prejudge someone even before they begin to learn about this person. This can be avoided if people just take the time to stop judging and to start just being kind to others.

In the graphic novel, Artemis Fowl, the essential questions are: What are the characteristics of courage and love. The characteristics of courage are shown when Artemis stands up to the fairy men that threaten to kill him and everyone in his manor. Another characteristic of courage is how Holly Short works with the “police” and protects the human world even though she is the only female fairy on the team. A characteristic of love is shown when Artemis wants the fairies to spare Butler and Butler’s sister Juliet.

The Last Dragon by Jane Yolen.
The essential questions that relate to The Last Dragon is: What are the characteristics of love and what are the characteristics of courage. The characteristic of love is at the end when Tansy and Lancot are fighting the dragon. Lancot was originally supposed to fight and kill the dragon, but Tansy knew that he was scared and not ready to fight the dragon. Also, when Lancot gets thrown into the water by the dragon, Tansy knows he can't swim, which makes Tansy sad knowing that he could die drowning. However, the tide was low and he was able to get out. At the end, they end up together. The other essential question that relates to the book is: What are the characteristics of courage. Tansy shows courage at the end of the book when she decides to help Lancot kill the dragon, which is also a characteristic of love. Lancot also shows courage when he agrees to fight the dragon in the middle of the book. He also shows courage when he doesn't let Tansy fight the dragon, which leads him to get thrown into the water, when he doesn't know how to swim. All in all, the characteristics of love and courage were in The Last Dragon.
    Defiance by Carla Jablonski.
The essential questions that relate to Defiance are: What are the characteristics of courage and what are the characteristics of love. The characteristic of courage is throughout the whole book when Paul draws pictures of the Germans and posts them around town, getting them mad. Also, he goes to live with the Maquis for a while, rebelling against the Germans. The characteristic of love is also throughout the whole book. For example, when Sylvie finds out that the Germans plan an attack on the Maquis, she quickly has to tell them that they’re going to be attacked before they actually are attacked. Overall, there are characteristics of love and courage in this book.

In my first graphic novel that I read, “Cat Burglar Black” the essential questions that are found in the novel are what are the characteristics of courage and what things are the most important in life. Characteristics of courage are in the graphic novel because the main character K is a very courageous teenager who has been on her own since her parents had died. In the end of the novel, she had the ability to go against the bad people that do not want whats best for her but really whats best for themselves. It also shows K what the most important things in life are because she realizes that her whole life doesn't just have to consist of her being shipped off from one homeless place for children to the next but instead to have the chance to follow her dreams.

The next graphic novel that I read, ‘Foiled” includes some of the essential questions that we learned in school. These essential questions are what are the characteristics of courage, what are the characteristics of love, what things are the most important in life. Characteristics of courage are displayed in “Foiled” because the main character Aliera has the courage to fence people that are many years older than her and of the opposite gender. Characteristics of love are also in the book because Aliera falls in love for the first time with a boy that just transferred to her school. She is memorized by his charm like every other girl in the school and by how handsome he is. Aliera realizes what the most important things in life to her are because she has a disabled cousin and she realizes that her life is very lucky compared to her cousin’s so she makes an effort to see her every Saturday. Also Aliera finds fencing very important in her life so even though many other people may classify her as weird for fencing she still loves to do it and no one can stop her from making it one of the most important things in her life.

    Trouble Maker Book One
In the graphic novel, Trouble Maker, book one, by Janet and Alex Evanovich the essential question that connects to the book is, what are the characteristics of courage. In this graphic novel a woman named Alex and a man named Sam are off to help a friend called Rosa. She seemed to have been kidnapped, and they have to go find her by themselves. It takes a lot of courage to go find a friend of theirs, and go against some dangerous and threatening people. Courage is very important but is hard to get. In this graphic novel the main characters really use their courage to help a friend in need, and without them Rosa might even be dead.

    The Story of Roberto Clemente
In the graphic novel, The Story of Roberto Clemente, the essential question that connects to the book is what things are important in life. The graphic novel is a bibliography about a famous baseball player called Roberto Clemente. He is a professional baseball born in Puerto Rico, with an amazing background. He starts off as a young boy who adores his older brother who is a professional baseball player. He grows up, looking up to his brother, and decides he wants to be like him. He sets his mind to achieve being a professional baseball player and works hard. This was very important to him. This was something that he really enjoyed and wanted to make a living off of. If you really love or enjoy something, it means it is an important thing in your life.

In the graphic novel "Clan Apis" an essential question is "What is important in life?" in this book Nyuki's (the main character) sister is important because she encourages her and looks after her. Also an important thing is to be safe, because if a bee gets into trouble it's only weapon is it's stinger. Which will kill the bee after one use.

  15. In the graphic novel "Pendragon" an essential question is "What is important in life?" The answer to that is Bobby's uncle Press. Uncle Press helps Bobby live throughout the whole story. He also encourages him and gives him tips on how to survive on there adventure. Another essential question is "What are characteristics of courage?" The answer is bravery and confidence. Since Bobby Pendragon has those two characteristics it helps him achieve his goals during his adventure.

  17. In my novel “Ronald Reagan”, it showed characteristics of courage by showing how Reagan moved up through his economic and social status by being a good public speaker, fit, and smart. It took courage for him to be so politically active when his family was so poor. He also showed characteristics of love when he supported his family with the little money he was earning with small jobs. This act of kindness and love showed how truly caring he was. Things that are important are in life are the things like giving your poor parents money or changing America for the better. Judging someone before you meet them or talk to them is prejudice. This can be stopped by being friends with everyone. People may not always get along, but for necessary things, people can put aside their differences and work together.

  18. My verse novel “Booth”, show the Essential questions when Booth shows courage when he steeled himself and killed Lincoln. Everyone was against him and yet he assassinated Lincoln because he thought he was doing it for the good of his country. Booth showed tremendous amounts of courage by not listening to his brothers, parents, and friends, he did it because he loved his country and countrymen so much. In this, he also shows characteristics of love because he loved his country and fellow confederates so much that he thought he was doing the right thing. This novel reveals what things are important in life by showing inner struggles with himself, his family, and his friends. This shows that the important things aren’t everyday common things, but your country and what you’re willing to do for it. Prejudice is caused by people not knowing much about someone, but still judging them based on what they look like. Prejudice can be avoided by people not judging and waiting until you get to know them.

Tom Shows the characteristics of courage when he sat in the witness box and said that Joe committed the murder and not Muff. In the graphic novel Solomon’s Thieves the essential question that describes it is “How does imagery bring the story to life?” This is true because in a graphic novel there is no narrator to illustrate the setting. So the graphics illustrate the setting and the people. Also a narrator can’t include all things like graphics do. Graphics can include far off things that give the story some little kicks.

In the novel Julius Caesar the essential question is “What connections can be made between what we read and how we live our lives?” This is connected to the novel because it takes rebels and famous people and combines them. In the past a really famous leader was Caesar. Now they added the element of rebellion into the story. Rebellion is relatable because in the Arab Spring there are a lot of rebellions going on.

In the book “The Little Prince” there were several essential questions that connected to it. One question that was answered was characteristics of love because the little prince and the man grow a strong bond. Not only do they become very close as friends, but towards the end of the book, the man starts to see the prince as not only a friend but as his own son. Therefore, some characteristics of love are your family, and caring about the people you love. Another essential question that was answered is the characteristics of courage. This was answered because in “The Little Prince,” he has to be very courageous to greet all the new people he meets, and the fact that he is all alone and doesn’t really have any family. Therefore, the characteristics of courage are to be curious and independent. The last essential question that was answered is what things are important in life. It was answered because it shows you in this story how it’s very important to make sure that you are careful when riding or traveling on anything that could be potentially dangerous. Also, it shows you how important it is to have a family member or friend that loves and takes care of you. Therefore, don’t take your family for granted because one day they may not be there.

The Baby-sitters Club by Ann M. Martin
In the graphic novel, The Baby-sitters Club, a common concept is being addressed, which is learning from our experiences. Towards the beginning of the year an essential question was developed, what connections can be made between what we read and how we live our lives? This graphic novel can relate to our everyday lives because no one is perfect and we make mistakes everyday, but we grow from them. We seek improvement in our flaws and the consideration of adjustment we learn and profess our understanding of the mistake.

Around The World by Matt Phelan
In the beginning of the school year we addressed a specific essential quote that relates to the graphic novel, what is the authors purpose? When reading the passage a concept was identified, which was that when you stick your mind to a dream or a goal, with determination it can become a reality. For example, each story about traveling the world started as an idea, but then it turned into a task and then morphed into an accomplished dream. along each journey none of the travelers thought of giving up, instead they thought of traveling faster. therefore, the authors purpose of this graphic novel is to show the readers that with faith and a goal, you will become successfully.

    Book 1: Fahrenheit 451

In the graphic novel, Fahrenheit 451, the main character, Guy Montag, shows the first essential of courage. He shows courage in the story by risking his house and his life but hiding illegal books in his house. He hides the books because they are illegal and he can't resist reading and becoming inspired by the novels. He is courageous by hiding these, not telling anybody, except his wife, Millie. He shows love in the story for the love of books. He shows that he loves books so much, he does an illegal act but keeping them in his house, just to read them and fall in love. He also shows life by living his life to the fullest. He is a fireman, which is the best job in his world. He also has a wife, and a very nice house. He lives in a community where he is gratefully excepted. People are prejudice to him near the end of the story because they find out he has books, which make them think he's a bad guy, even though he's very nice. He avoids it by ignoring people who talk to him about the books, and eventually forgets them by leaving the town.

    Book 2: Maus

In the graphic novel, Maus, it shows that the main character, Vladek, is courageous. He is proven to be courageous because he explains to his son and son's wife how he survived World War 2 and was courageous enough to hide his food, and escape violent acts, and the war. He shows love for the love of his first wife, Anja. Vladek finds a nice, young lady named Mancie who secretly delivers message from Vladek to Anja and back. This shows that Vladek truly loved Anja, and wanted to always keep in touch with each other. Vladek shows that he is full of life by trying to maintain his health. During the war, and modern time, he always takes medicine and always treats himself when in need. People are prejudice to him because he can speak multiple languages, such as Yiddish, English, and Polish. People think negatively about him, saying he shouldn't be treated more fairly than the other victims, since Vladek is treated more kindly than others. He ignores the prejudice acts by being friendly to all the victims and officers.

In the book “Prince of Persia,” there a couple essential questions that are answered. One of them is the characteristic of love. This is answered because in the story, Sheikh Amar tells the story of how he met a young Persian man who fell in love with a princess. He tells Sheikh of how they fell in love and in the end, he ends up getting put into jail for it. Therefore, the answer to this question is that love is hard, and sometimes it doesn’t always turn out right. The second essential question that was answered is the characteristics of courage. This is answered because in this story, the group of friends has to be very courageous to approach the judge and still speech with dignity. Also, it must take a lot of courage to keep yourself together when hearing that you will be killed. This happens when one of the men in the group tells the story of how he was almost put to his death. Therefore, the answer to this question is to stay calm because the worst thing you could do is panic.

She is also adventurous by trying to find her friend. I am a lot like Zita. I have adventures every day and I am also very curious. Zita's traits relate to my life every day.

I read the graphic novel, “Redwall” by Brian Jacques. The essential question that is addressed in my graphic novel is courage. The essential question is courage because the main character, whose name is Matthias and is a mouse, showed courage when he went to talk to a cat that is two times his size and also when he went to talk to a owl that he knew would try to kill and eat him as soon as he was spotted.

The second graphic novel that I read was called, “The Odyssey” which is written by Homer. The essential question that is addressed in this story is two things. They are courage and love. The main character shows courage because throughout his journey he faced many monsters and defeated them all without showing the smallest amount of fear. Furthermore, the main character showed love because he sailed across a sea filled with monsters so he could get two his wife

  29. In the book “Excalibur the legend of King Arthur”, by Tony Lee and Sam Hart, the essential questions are: What are the characteristics of courage, what things are important in life, and what causes prejudice and how can it be avoided? Arthur shows courage when he charges into battle doing what he thinks is right while knowing this was the day he would die. This is also an example of the important things in life. This an example because he is fighting to protect his family, his loved ones, and his kingdom. Finally, there was prejudice when the king and his subjects don’t believe that Arthur can beat the king because Arthur was just a kid at the time. They prejudged him because they didn’t know him and what he is capable of. It could have been avoided if they had taken the time to get to know him.

In the book “A Study in Scarlet”, by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle the essential questions are: What are the characteristics of courage, what things are important in life, and what causes prejudice and how can it be avoided? The dictionary defines courage, as the bravery to do what one thinks is right. I believe Sherlock Holmes show courage when he tails a suspected killer. Courage is also shown when Jefferson Hope tracks down the two men who killed his father in law and who also forced his would be wife to marry one of them. He finds the two trying to hide from him. Shortly after he kills them he gets caught, and he explains his story to the police. This is when he related to the second question: What things are important in life? He explains the importance of loved ones and family, and that is why he killed the men. Lastly, with regards to prejudice, everyone except Holmes thought Hope was an insane murderer. It could have been avoided if they knew everything Holmes knew about him. However, they found out later that he was not insane just a man looking for revenge.

In the book Maximum Ride by James Patterson, the essential questions that relate with this book are, What are the characteristics of love, and what are the characteristics of courage. In this book it opens with Ari, an eraser who is Jebs son helping his “flock to escape from the ITEX jail. This already shows that the flock sticks together. They are all like family. When Max and Fang get into an argument and form separate groups, each one of those groups always sticks together and they face any problems they might have altogether. These are characteristics of love. Toward the end of this book Max finds out that Jeb is actually her father. Through out this whole book they are faced with battles that they must be courageous in. In the end of the book when Max has to fight an eraser that is far more advanced than her, she must be courageous and try to fight it. This is a characteristic of courage. It is also a characteristic of love when Fang and Max makeup at the end. All in all, throughout this book, the characteristics shown are mainly love, and courage.

In the book Yossel by Joe Kubert, the essential questions that connect to this book are, What are the characteristics of love, what are the characteristics of courage, what things are important in life, and what is prejudice and how can it be avoided? This book is about a 15 year old jewish boy named Yossel. When Yossel is taken away with his mother and sister to the Warsaw Ghetto, he is only 13 years old. The story is told in the past tense. When it first opens, he and a group of people he is in the ghetto with. He is in the basement of the Warsaw Ghetto. This shows characteristics of love and what things are important in life. Yossel is a very gifted drawer. When he is asked how he became so good at drawing, he is asked if he got it from his mother or father. When he is asked this he remembers his parents and sister. This starts the story. When he is 13 years old he and his mother father and sister are called out of their house to be condemned to the Warsaw Ghetto. There, they were deprived all their belongings and made to wear uniforms that were blue and yellow striped. This is all because of the discrimination Hitler had toward the jewish people during the Holocaust. people can avoid discrimination by realizing that we are all people. We all need love and respect. People shouldn't think of themselves a better person than everyone else. While Yossel and his family were there they saw death and cruelty everywhere. They realized what the important things are in life and how to be courageous. Yossel often said throughout this graphic novel that drawing had saved his life. It had. The people running the Warsaw Ghetto had Yossel draw for them and in return, he would get scraps of food. He also said drawing was his escape from reality. This was something that was very important to Yossel. One day, Yossel came back from drawing for the officers and his Mother Father and Sister were being shipped off to a concentration camp. This showed a characteristic of love when they said their final goodbyes. Yossel eventually found his old Rebee. He didn’t even recognize him. The Rebbe told stories about what happened in the concentration camp that he had just escaped from. The Rebbe showed characteristics of courage when he went through the horrors of the concentration camp. Finally, at the end of this book Yossel and the group of people he is with try to fight the officers there. They are very successful. Until one day, Yossel and his group were found and they were eventually killed. Even though this story was incredibly sad, it showed many characteristics of love, courage, what things are important in life, and what is prejudice and how can we avoid it.

  31. In "Call of the Wild" by Jack Londons characteristics of courage, love and life lessons were shown. Buck showed a lot of courage through out the novel. For example he was very brave when he was fighting Spitz and he used his courage to defeat him and take his spot being the leader. Also, times were very hard for Buck because he didn't get much food and was always getting beaten, but Buck didn't give up and he kept trying. Buck showed love in this novel because he and Thorton became really close and saved each other's lives. When Thorton died Buck was really sad and really missed him even though he is a dog. Also, the life lesson of survival of the fittest was learned in this novel because the sled dogs got little to no food every day and many of the dogs starved to death or just got to tired to move anymore. Buck on the other hand stayed strong, he fell back a little but he survived the hunger and pain.

In the book "Avalon High" by Meg Cabot, a life lesson learned is within every person there is always someone else. This means that you can never really know a person well enough because people change. For example, Someone may seem a good person but twenty years from now that same person might become a murderer. This life lesson is a little different though in "Avalon High" because each character is legitimately a different person, their normal selves, and the reincarnation of the King Arthur legend.

The book Foiled strongly relates to the essential questions, what are the characteristics of courage and love. Foiled relates to love because Aliera fell in love with a boy named Avery. She was shy at first, but then realized how different he was from everyone else. Most of the girls still liked him despite this fact just because he looked nice. Aliera also had a lot of courage in her story. Avery starts to get too close to her fencing equipment, he always asks about it as if there was something about it he wanted. Even though he was the most handsome boy in school, she never gave the sword up, and she stopped liking him. This took a lot of courage because he seemed to like her a lot, and she liked him too, but she had limits. Avery turned out to be an ugly king from another realm, so she made the right choice by not dating him.

The book Solomon’s Thieves relates to the essential questions, the characteristics of courage, and what causes prejudice and how can it be avoided. Courage is in the story from beginning to end, the Templars are brave in adventuring through the world. The Templars are faced with many tough battles and situations that a normal person would run away from, but instead they battle through them. They might have a reckless way in doing so, but it shows that they are not to be messed with. Prejudice is apparent throughout the story, mainly how the Templars are the thing people think about when they hear crime, or murder. Templars were once supposed to help the town, but it only took one mistake to make them all look bad. The main problem in the story is how the Templars were being chased by the King and his men. They were very prejudiced against Templars being very bad, dirty, and that they all committed crimes. The Templars in the end may be prejudiced against, but they still have their pride.

In the book "The Wizard of Oz" the essential questions that are answered are what are the characteristic of love, and what are the characteristics of courage. They are because on her way to the emerald city Dorothy and Toto meet the cowardly lion, and the heartless tin man. They want to tag along on her trip because the lion believes that the wizard of Oz can give him courage. The tin man decides he wants to come because he has no heart, so he believes he is incapable of feeling emotions. At the end of the story it becomes apparent that the wizard doesn't actually have any powers. However, the wizard tells the lion to have courage he must have confidence in himself, but this is not enough for the lion so the wizard gives him something to drink which he tells him is courage to trick him. The lion immediately is no longer cowardly. Therefore, courage is not something you can just drink and automatically have, it is believing that you can do something, and believing in yourself. In addition, the wizard tells the heartless tin man that he should be happy not to have a heart, but this does not please the tin man. So the wizard tricks him by giving him a heart ornament. The tin man becomes very proud, which leads me to believe that the characteristics of love have to do with being proud of yourself and being kind to others.

In the graphic Novel “Mouse Guard Legends of the Guard” has only some questions that apply to the story. The questions that do apply are ,what things are important in life? what causes prejudice and how can it be avoided? The things that are important vary for each and every person. This first essential question is supported in the story by Junes important things are his inn and making sure he could pay for his own support. Prejudice is caused by pre judging someone without even knowing them. This can be avoided by getting to know someone before you make assumptions. This was not shown in the book, prejudice but June could have judged the people and their stories which would be prejudice but he didn’t.

In the book “Spring” by Mark Crilley the essential questions are what are the characteristics of courage and what are the characteristics of love. In my graphic novel courage relates back to the book because the main character Miki is a very courageous character. She is courageous because she follows the boy around after school. If the boy were to see here he would be very angry and never want to be her friend. She also, sneaks into his house when he is not home and goes through all of this stuff. Love relates back to this graphic novel because the boy Hiro has a secret job and it is all about love. He has to watch people in relationships and record the data.

In the book “The Call of the Wind” by Jack London’s the essential questions are what are the characteristic of courage. This story represents courage because the dog Buck is very strong, smart, and courageous. For example, this dog Buck leads a pack of dogs in Canada for many days without much food and rest. He also learns how to live in the cold for many nights with no food for many days.

A text to self connection would be when I was in Wyoming I went to a rodeo and people rode bulls, and even almost got hit by them. This is the same in the Hardy Boys Dude Ranch O’ Death when a lady almost is killed by a bull but frank distracts the bull like a rodeo clown while Joe gets the lady. The essential question in this novel would definitely be courage because in many cases Joe and Frank risk a lot. Like when Joe saves Warden Hogan and almost gets crushed in the process.

A text to self connection would be that Jack did his final scheme to help his Mom both financially and to help her escape Blunderboars prison. I would do the same for my mom if she needed help. The essential question for this novel would be love. Love because jack came up with this whole scheme just to save his mom. That to me shows true love in very hard circumstances.

In the book "Resistance" by Carla Jablonski and Leland Purvis the essential question that is answered is what are the characteristics of courage. This question is answered because the story takes place in a small French village, where many German occupiers are stationed; and one of the main characters is Jewish. When Henri's parents are taken away because they are Jewish, it is up to his friends Paul and Marie to keep him safe. They hide him away which they could get in big trouble for, and they all join the resistance in hope to reunite Henri with his parents. They could be killed on the spot for hiding him or for being in the resistance, therefore they all have courage. This leads me to conclude that the characteristics of courage are believing in yourself, to fight for what you believe in, and pretending to be brave when you're really scared out of your mind.

  43. The Hardy Boys #9 To Die or Not to Die:
In this graphic novel the essential questions that connect with the book are: What are the characteristics of courage? What things are important in life? In the book the character Frank shows courage by trying to save the production from being sabotaged. It is a very dangerous mission, but he decides to complete it so that nobody else gets hurt. This shows true courage. Also, in the graphic novel the character Joelle who craves attention. She is so caught up in trying to get attention that she risks her life and everybody elses. This shows things that are important to life because it shows that you don’t need to have all of the attention if many people get injured because of it.
The Stuff of Legend Book 1: The Dark:
In this graphic novel the essential questions are: What are the characteristics of courage? What are the characteristics of love? What things are important in life? In this novel the toys show characteristics of courage because they venture into the dark to save the boy. That shows great bravery. This story also shows characteristics of love because the toys go on a dangerous adventure to save the boy that they love so much. This story shows things important in life because the toys find that having friend is probably the most important thing to have.

In Thoreau at Walden by John Porcellino, courage, love, and a life lesson are shown. A characteristic of courage is shown when he leaves the center of town to go live off by this pond by himself. This is courageous because he had to learn how to live on his own and survive on nature’s resources. Also, the characteristic of love is shown when he is living by Walden Pond. It is shown here because you can tell that he loves it by the pond much more than when he lived in town. Things that are important in life that are shown in this book is to make sure you follow your dreams. All in all, these characteristics and essential things can show you things about the main character.

In Amulet by Kazu Kibuishi, courage, love, and a life lesson are shown. A characteristic of courage is shown when Max decides to take the mother stone. This is courageous because he could be killed since it is a very dangerous task and everyone is out to get him. Also, in the story a characteristic of of love is shown. It is shown when Trellis goes into Emily’s dream to try to get her out because it could end up killing Emily. This shows that Trellis cares and loves Emily too much to see her be killed. In this book, it also shows you an important thing to be careful about in life. That is to be careful about having things control your life. All in all, these essential things can help you understand the story and characters much more.

  45. In the book, "Maximum Ride Volume 5”, the essential questions are: What are the characteristics of courage, what are the characteristics of love, what things are important in life, and what causes prejudice and how can it be avoided. In Maximum ride 5 the characteristics of courage are shown when Max fights off erasers to go and save her flock. Another part when she uses courage is when she removes her chip from her arm. This decision involves Max using courage since she could lose the use of that arm. However Max takes the chip out anyway. This shows her courage. The book also shows love since Max loves her flock so much that her face becomes really mad and she goes after the tracks left behind to rescue her flock. This shows that she loves her flock. The things that are important in life for her are saving the world and keeping her flock safe and happy. These are important to her since she feels an obligation to save the world. She needs to save the world since she is most likely the only one who can. Keeping her flock safe and happy is important to her since the flock is basically her family. She feels it is her responsibility to keep everyone safe since she is the oldest and is the leader of the flock. Prejudice is also in this book since the white coats have not even interacted with Max and her flocks and just regard them as science experiments. They prejudge the flock as science experiments rather than treat them as humans which they really are.

In Spy Goddess the groups of kids rescue Rachel. This requires a lot of courage since they may be killed in the attempt to save her. In this graphic novel, we see the essential question “What connections can be made between what we read and how we live our life?”. This is present in how the Martin, the main character, reacts to his very difficult situation. After his friends are arrested, his home is condemned, and his honor destroyed, he doesn’t give up. He doesn’t say that he can’t fight back, he fights back with all he’s got. He scrapes together a small band of Templar fugitives, like himself, and fights the corrupt French government to find the truth, and prove his friends innocent. We all should live life like this, never giving up on what is important to us, what is right. This book is a perfect example of what you should do in life, not give up, not back down, fight for what you believe in, and fight for what is right.

    Fight For Freedom-
The essential question in this graphic novel was “How does the author’s choice of narrative elements, plot, setting, characters, conflicts, ect. effect/change the work?” The choice of setting and characters is the key to the moral of the story. A black slave in the South during the Civil War is the perfect place to get the moral to never give up on what’s right across. Being a slave means he has nothing, he is in the worst situation possible, but the Civil War gives him the hope he needs to free himself. With the North army so close, Sam, the black slave boy, gets the courage to run away from his owners and get to the slave free North. When he gets there, unlike what most people would do, he joins the Northern army to free all other slaves, and, most importantly, his father and mother. The author couldn't have picked a better character and setting for this moral. It is the perfect story, a terrible situation, a glimmer of hope he pursues, and then gives hope to others. The setting is truly the perfect place for this story.

Fahrenheit 451 can relate to the essential questions “What are the characteristics of courage?” and “What things are important in life?” To begin, Guy Montag was courageous throughout the entire book. In the beginning, he had to be courageous to light the hoses on fire. Later in the book, he had to show courage by persevering through the long escape from the robot hound. Also, he and his neighbor Clarisse McClellan realize that having fun is not the only important thing in life, and that it is also important to learn and to read, including reading books.
In Macbeth, the essential questions pertinent to the story are “What are the characteristics of courage” and “What are the important things in life.” Macbeth was courageous when he killed the other men who had more power over him, though it was not a good deed. In addition, he and his wife did not realize that total power was not one of the most important things in life, and it is not good to be greedy. His greed for power brought him to his demise and left him and his family with no power at all in the end.

Courage can also be portrayed when trying to fight the unwinnable fight. Trying to win the unwinnable game. Captain Ahab shows courage when he attempts to hunt Moby Dick, who took his leg. He knows he can’t capture or kill Moby Dick, but he tries anyway. He spent 40 years at sea, just attempting to kill Moby Dick. When he finally meets him, he shows true bravery by taking him on, face to face.

The characters of love are also the rest of the flock for Max. Even though they aren't blood related they are still a family, and she will do everything she can to protect them.

The book The Amazing Screw- On Head connects to the essential question what are the characteristics of courage. For example, The Screw- On Head is very courageous because he fights off enemies that try to gain power from the world. For example, when the Emperor Zombie tries the steal the jewels , worshipped by the wizards, The Amazing Screw - On Head comes to the rescue. He boots the Emperor away very far, but he is not killed. This whole book has a lot of courage in it because President Lincoln also has to have courage on making a decision whether or not to send The Screw-On Head to secret missions. This is also similar to real life situation because President Obama has to have a lot of courage taking on the job as a mighty President.

The book No Girls Allowed connects to the essential question what things are important in life. No Girls Allowed, the book, persuades women to pursue their goal or accomplishment no matter the circumstances. For example, in early history many women dressed up as men so then they could fight in the war. This shows that women had a great amount of pride and confidence , even though they got little to no respect. Even today some women get payed less than men , but now women’s rights are slowly getting more attention.

In the book “The Lightning Thief” the essential question that is represented in the book is “What are the characteristics of Courage?” In the book Percy must go through many tough times where he could have just quit and went home, but he knew that there were too many things on the line for him to do that. Throughout the story he becomes face to face with life threatening obstacles. Such as, bloodthirsty lions and 2000 year old witches. The Girl Who Owned A City: I think 3 out of the 4 essential questions were answered in this graphic novel. The first question about what the characteristics of courage are in this book would be how Lisa was able to be courageous and take over her own city. For instance, Lisa goes straight from both of her parents dying of a apocalyptic virus to picking up the pieces and creating a hardworking, functioning family-like city. Another question about what is important in life I feel is answered as well. In this book, it really stresses on how friends and family support can get you anywhere in life. The last question answered about prejudice and how it can be solved I saw was answered was how these kids were treated as if they need their mommy and daddy to do everything for them when these kids were able to run their own city together.

The Merchant Of Venice: I also felt that three out of the four essential questions were answered in this graphic novel as well. The first question about what are the characteristics of love was answered because the husband purposely picked the lead chest of jewels because it shows that the beauty within is the most important and that we should love people for who they and not what they have or how rich they are. The next question I think was answered was what things are important in life. In this story, love and passion for one another is a key characteristic of why life is as wonderful as it is. For example, Bassanio was willing to give up his ring just so he could go back to see his lover again. The final question I thought was answered was about prejudice and how it was solved. An example in the book is how all the Italians were always mean and unfair to the one Jewish man in the city which is barbaric. The problem to this prejudice is not fully solved in the story but Bassanio and his christian friends should respect all religion no matter what they are.

In Maximum Ride, Volume 3, the essential question that was addressed was Courage. Courage is supported in the graphic novel because the characters had courage in every chapter. For example, in one chapter the kids had to fight a bunch of flying wolves that were sent to kill them. In addition, they were simply walking home from school one day and suddenly they were jumped by a man, the scientists son, who had originally kidnapped them. They had to be courageous and not only fight the man, but then had to return home to a house with no parents waiting for them to walk in. All in all, the Maximum Ride Volume 3 graphic novel displays courage in many different ways.

  76. The graphic novel Maximum Ride (2) by James Patterson is supported by the essential question “How does the author use imagery to bring the story to life?” because in the graphic novel the author uses very descriptive action words. For example, when there is an action and fighting and someone gets hurt or punched, the author uses words such as “wham,” “shriek,” “smack,” or “crash.” The words help give the story imagery to represent the actions occurring during the graphic novel.

The graphic novel Thoreau at Walden by John Porcellino is supported by the essential question “What connections could be made between what we read and how we live our lives?” because in the novel Thoreau deals with society and authority, and solving human problems while we live our lives trying to solve our problems, and we also deal with authority and society too. For instance, in Thoreau at Walden, Thoreau goes to observe people in town when he runs into society and messes with authority by not paying a tax, so he gets thrown in jail. Thoreau also tries to solve human problems on the shore of Walden pond. We too live trying to solve our problems, big and small. Also, we have to follow the law.

In the Graphic Novel, Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer and Andrew Donkin, there were two essential questions that stood out, Courage and love. In addition, Courage is displayed many times, for example Artemis walks into many situations where he could get seriously hurt, even killed, but walks out unharmed and with whatever he was there for. Also, he doesn't please a lot of powerful creatures, especially pixies because he kidnapped one and fought off an entire squad of them with help from Butler. Love is displayed because Artemis is trying to decide these ancient books and return his family to its past riches and fame to make his father and mother proud. Furthermore, his father hasn't been home for a really long time and no one knows what happened to him, and his mother is crazy because she misses him so much. All in all, the two essential questions Love and Courage were definitely displayed in this Graphic Novel.

In the graphic novel, “Sita’s Ramayana” there were multiple essential questions that applied or were shown in the story. The questions were, What are the characteristics of courage? What are the characteristics of love? Courage means the quality of mind or spirit that enables a person to face difficulty, danger, pain etc. Courage was shown in this book when Sita was taken by the King of Lanka as prisoner, but throughout that time she kept a positive mind and attitude even though she did not know if she ever was going to get rescued. The Second essential question is, What are the characteristics of love? Love is the amount care you have for a person. Love is in this graphic novel, it showed by sitas love for her husband. She loved Rama so much that she rather be a prisoner of Lanka then be the Ravana’s wife because she still loved her husband.

In the novel “Amulet, the StoneKeeper”, the essential questions that are used in my story are what are the characteristics of courage and the many things that are very important in life. In the story, courage is showed at many different points and Em, the main character has a lot of courage. For example, Em has to lead her younger brother to find her Mom in a very dangerous setting. Also, the stone had sent her to find her mother and she had a lot of courage to follow that stone. The second essential question is how the book relates to the important things in life. In the novel, the author shows that family is a very important value in life and nobody should ever forget that. Courage relates to me because I believe that I am very courageous and always stand tall when I have to.

In the novel, “The Hardy Boys, Board to Death”, relates to the essential question about the courage and connections between the book and our lives today. In the short novel, the Hardy boys have a tremendous amount of courage. They are sent to save the skateboard contest which proved to be very dangerous and difficult. In our lives today, if we don’t prove to have courage, we will not succeed. Courage is what enabled the Hardy boys to succeed in this instance.

  83. In the graphic novel “Artemis Fowl the Graphic Novel” by Eoin Colfer and Andrew Donkin the essential question what is important in life plays a role in the story. For Artemis Fowl the most important thing in his life seemed to be becoming a master criminal but by the end Artemis revealed that the real thing that was most important to him was family. Furthermore Artemis paid a fortune to have one wish granted, so that his mother would become sane again.

In the graphic novel “Evolution the Story of Life on Earth” by Jay Hosler the essential question that was most important to the story, in literal meaning, is what is important in life? The story of earth in the novel is told from the perspective of an alien touring the king and prince of his plant through the story of evolution on earth. For example they go through exhibits about how humans evolved from apes.

In the novel ''Mythos,'' by Paul Jenkins the characters all show courage. For example, Captain America is a very courageous character because he fights for his country and tries to keep it safe. Captain America shows this courage by going to war and fighting the Nazis. He does this courageous act because he loves his country. He stops the Nazis from doing bad thing and in the end he risks his life for his country.
In the novel '' Trickster'' many of the characters do not behave properly. For example, some characters bragged, stole things, and did other bad things. It is very important in life that you don't steal, brag, or lie because in some cases you can get in a lot of trouble. The crayfish, in the story ''Azban and the Crayfish'' lies to his friends and also brags that he killed the raccoon, but not knowing the raccoon was alive the crayfish were eaten and the crayfish was wrong.
